Paxil
The FDA is currently advising of a risk of birth defects
with Paxil use in pregnant mothers during their first three
months of pregnancy. The FDA is suggesting that Paxil increases
the risk of heart defects in unborn children and can allegedly
cause Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension.
Some clinical studies indicated that women who were using
Paxil during their first trimester of pregnancy were more
likely to have a baby with a heart defect than if they were
using other antidepressants. Because of these studies, the
FDA requested that GlaxoSmithKline reclassify Paxil to a “Category
D” drug for pregnant women. A “Category D” classification
simply means that studies involving pregnant women and this
drug have exposed risk to the fetus.
Paxil Related Birth Defects
Recent publishing’s from medical journals that looked
at the use antidepressant medicines during pregnancy and
newborns born with Persistent Pulmonary Tension (PPHN) show
some serious side effects including lack of oxygen due to
abnormal blood flow through the heart and lungs. This serious
condition (PPHN) in babies can cause them to be very sick
and in some cases even death. Studies have shown that babies
of mothers who took serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs,
the family of medicine Paxil belongs to, were 6 times as
likely to have babies with PPHN.
