Head injury can be defined as any injury to the scalp, skull,
or brain resulting from a blow to the head. Head injuries
are one of the most common forms of injury suffered by our
society today and can range in severity from a minor bump
on the head to permanent brain damage. According to the NIH
there are about 2,000,000 instances of head injury per year
with about 25% of these head injuries requiring hospitalization.
There are two major classifications of head injuries. The
less severe and more common of these is external injury
which is mainly comprised of damage to the scalp resulting
in a laceration or some swelling. The often more serious
internal injury or closed head injury can include
injury of the skull, interior blood vessels, or the brain
itself.
The causes of head injury are mostly accidental in nature
such as: car wrecks, sports injuries, work injuries and falls
but can also include physical assault or the negligent actions
of ones self or another. Males age 17-25 are the most likely
demographic to suffer a head injury as they comprise about
50% of all reported head injury cases. Most of these head
injuries result directly from car accidents. Young children
and the elderly are also vulnerable to head injury mainly
from falls.
