What is Gadolinium ?
People in the United States and around the world should consider themselves fortunate as a result of the incredible advances that medical science make every year. So many of these advances not only make the doctor's job easier, but they also literally save lives. Conditions that were never treatable or even easily diagnosed before are now discovered quickly and efficiently.

Gadolinium FDA Warnings and Side Effects
One of the advances that is particularly beneficial is that of the MRI. An MRI is a deep scan of internal tissue and organs that allows doctors to see a much deeper picture of potential problems inside a patient's body. On the heels of the advent of the MRI was the introduction of contrast agents that only made the analysis of the MRI even more straightforward.

Unfortunately, these contrast agents often contain the element gadolinium, and this element has proven to be extremely problematic for those who suffer from kidney problems. The Gadolinium lawyers at Atkins & Markoff have heard several tragic stories in this regard, and below is a brief look at the issue. If you or someone you love has suffered as a result of this issue, contact a gadolinium lawyer at Atkins & Markoff immediately to schedule an initial consultation.

The Problem with Gadolinium
The specific problem with having a gadolinium-based contrast agent injected into a patient with kidney problems is the tendency for those patients to be unable to expel the substance from their bodies, as this is what happens with patients whose kidneys are working properly. When gadolinium remains in the system for too long, a serious side effect has been discovered as a result, and the need for gadolinium lawyers has arisen as a result.

The side effect linked to Gadolinium-based contrast agents is known as "NSF," which is an acronym for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis. NSF is a rare and relatively 'new' disease, and its symptoms can grow to be so severe that they can lead to the death of a patient. NSF leads to extreme thickening of the skin and joints, and it's a progressive disease that attacks the internal organs.

Symptoms of NSF include thick skin, tenderness of the joints, swelling of the skin, the appearance of red or dark patches on the skin and other symptoms that by themselves may not signal danger. However, if you have kidney problems and have received a contrast agent injection prior to an MRI, contact a doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
